GENESIS

In early 1999 a group of citizens coming from different walks of life got together to discuss concerns they shared about the state of affairs in Sikkim. These concerns ranged from the environment, education, health, social problems, unemployment, poverty, changing demographic patterns, the state of the economy to governance. The organization was formed with a view to addressing the issues emanating from these various areas in partnership with the people of Sikkim and state government authorities.

Sikkim Development Foundation is a non-profit, non-government, non-political and non-sectarian organization with headquarters in Gangtok, Sikkim, India. It is Registered with the Land Revenue Department, Government of Sikkim, Serial No 1057 Volume No I  on 4th of February,1999.

The Executive Members of SF are committed to conducting the affairs of the Foundation in a professional, open and transparent manner. They subscribe to high ethical standards of honesty, integrity, respect, fairness, trust, responsibility, accountability, commitment and caring.

   MISSION STATEMENT  

 

Sikkim Development Foundation exists to improve the living standard and quality of life for the people of Sikkim, particularly for women, children, minorities, handicapped and other disadvantaged or marginalized sections of the society.

 


To realise this mission SF will

• Work towards creating a climate of freedom, equality, justice, peace, understanding and opportunity in the State.
• Be actively involved as an agent of change for effective governance in the State.
• Promote environmentally and economically sustainable, self-reliant community development projects in the areas of institution building, health, education, agriculture, rural development, community infrastructure and micro-enterprise.
• Ensure that the projects reflect the needs and aspirations of the community and to elicit their participation and ownership of the projects.
• Strengthen, support and enhance the effectiveness and professional capacities of other organizations engaged in activities that are directly or indirectly aligned to the Foundation’s goals and objectives.
• Work towards protecting and preserving the State’s immensely rich bio-diverse environment and promote responsible tourism.
• Develop and propagate traditional arts and crafts by creating and finding markets for them.
• Educate our youth on the detrimental effects of drugs, smoking, alcohol and AIDS to their health and society.
• Provide a broadly based participatory forum to discuss issues of concern to the State and establish links, networks and collaborative efforts to tackle these issues.
• Hold as well as attend seminars, workshops and conferences at regional, national and international levels to gain insights in new ideas and thoughts in the field of development.
• Raise funds from all legal sources from within the country and overseas to finance various projects.
• Collaborate and work in cooperation with State and Central Governments, their agencies and other NGOs.
